Ten Healthy Tips for Living a Long, Vibrant Life

Health is not a guarantee handed to you on a platter.  It’s the product of the choices you make.  Degenerative conditions like arthritis, Alzheimer’s or diabetes are often the result of long-term, sub-clinical conditions (like poor diet or exposure to toxins.) If you’d like to experience a long, healthy life, start with these tips:

  1. Keep Mentally Strong. Learn something new each day. Take a class, play an instrument, speak a new language, or do crosswords.  Challenge yourself and go outside the box.  Make yourself feel uncomfortable, you may find enjoyment in something new!
  2. Stay Physically Active. Exercise improves your mood, deters disease, increases energy, promotes better sleep and strengthens immunity.  Fat is stored fuel just waiting to be burned.  If you are having a tough time getting started contact the office and join one of our boot camps or personal exercise sessions.  If pain has you sidelined, go see your chiropractor to start moving better today!
  3. Eat the Rainbow. Your plate should be a rainbow of colors at every meal.  Eliminate high calorie, low nutrient snacks and beverages and make smarter food choices.  If you are overweight, portion control your carbohydrates and eat until satisfied but not full.  When you take your first deep breath you should stop eating.  If you are eating out, have the server put half your meal in a to-go container before it hits your plate.  Focus on getting healthier, not losing weight.  When you are healthy you will be at a healthy weight.  Make it a point to eat at least five fresh vegetables and three fresh fruits daily.  One in four bites should be protein.  Meals do not have to be gourmet – try egg salad, raw veggies, fruit and a slice of whole grain bread.
  4. Read labels. If you can’t pronounce it you shouldn’t be eating it.  Leave the processed foods, canned or boxed meals, soda, and meal replacements at the grocery store.  Eat out less. You will not only save money, but you will be healthier.
  5. Check the Score. Why wait until you don’t feel well to get checked? Prevention is key and is much more cost affordable in the long run.  Waiting for a diagnosis or problem to be bad enough will only cost you more money, and your mental and physical well-being will already be compromised.  Blood is full of information about your health.  Emerging problems appear in testing before the physical signs.  You can have 20% kidney function left, yet virtually no symptoms.  The sooner a problem is found, the easier it is to correct and the less damage it can do.  Get a comprehensive metabolic profile that will show the entire picture versus only spot checking the problems.  We can do a comprehensive testing at our office.
  6. Avoid drugs & try the safest options first. It’s important to understand that medications do not “fix” your problem. The underlying conditions which caused the problem will continue to progress resulting in a decline in your health, more doctors’ visits and more medication.  Too often patients come to our office as a last resort.  They’ve seen specialist, taken medications and are still getting worse.  Many conditions can be healed by nutrition, chiropractic, acupuncture, and supplementation.  Did you know you should only be on that proton-pump inhibitor (acid reflux medication) for a two-week period of time?  It is not meant to be a permanent fix and can greatly affect your well-being.
  7. Take Vitamins. It is important to “get your score” and have your blood levels checked. This can assist in knowing what and how much one should take.  Not all vitamins are the same and not each person is the same.  Just because one vitamin worked for your sister doesn’t mean it is the right one for you.  The ingredients and the processing determines the quality and how well you will absorb that vitamin.  For example, vitamin D needs to be taken with a meal that contains fat and iron is best absorb with vitamin C.  Our products are both GMP and NSF certified.
  8. Go to the Dentist. Oral health affects your overall health.  Gum disease is associated with issued like diabetes and heart disease.  Good oral hygiene and a healthy diet to support oral health and reduce inflammation is key.
  9. For Women – Get a Thermogram. There is controversy right now over the use of Mammography and if it is causing more harm than good.  I am definitely not saying to cancel your mammogram, but check into your options.  A thermogram takes an infrared image of the breasts and detects the early signs of breast cancer.  Women ages 18+ are encouraged to have a scan.
  10. Relax & Have fun! We all work entirely too hard to not take time to have fun.  Numerous studies show that those who live the longest are optimistic, surround themselves with family and friends and laugh often.  Simplify your life and start finding joy in the little things!

Indoor Activities for Active Little Minds

Are your little ones feeling cooped up this winter? Are you at a loss on what to do to keep your sanity without breaking the pocketbook? Keep them on the move with these active indoor games.  Kids have a lot of energy and in the winter months with everyone cooped up inside it can make it drag on forever.  There are still a lot of fun activities one can do to burn off that extra energy and keep their bodies healthy and moving!

  1. Make an obstacle course. Give the kids a room to “take over” and let them build their own obstacle course. Here are some ideas:
    • Place pillows on the floor a foot or so apart and jump over them without touching the pillow.
    • Attach a string from one end of the room to another (try using furniture to attach it to) and limbo or crawl under it without touching the string.
    • Make a tunnel or cave to crawl through by lining up some chairs and throwing a sheet across them.
    • Have them walk like a crab or hop like a bunny.
    • Wear a big silly hat throughout the course—if it falls off, you must start over!
    • Lay a hula hoop on the ground and jump in and out of the hoop five times.
    • Walk 10 feet with a beanbag on your head.
    • Fill a bucket with rice or pasta and bury an object inside—search through the bucket as quickly as possible to find it!
    • End the course with a ball toss into a basket (use an empty waste basket or laundry basket).
  1. Have a Dance Party. Put on some tunes (Pandora has some great kid-friendly stations; search for “Radio for Kids”) and let the kids boogie. You can even turn their dancing into a game.  When you stop the music, they have to stop and hold their position.
  2. Play some classics. Think: Duck, Duck, Goose, Simon Says, Hide n Seek, or Musical Chairs. You could also create an indoor hopscotch using painter’s tape to create the squares.
  3. Host a fitness competition. You could set out a jump rope and a hula hoop, and then make a few other stations with activities like push-ups, jumping jacks or somersaults. Set goals for each station and have the kids go through the stations one-by-one.
  4. Go hallway bowling. This is a perfect game for a hallway. Use plastic cups or empty water bottles and set them up in a triangular formation. Use a medium-sized rubber ball as the bowling ball.
  5. Build a fort. Let them be creative on how to build the fort and then give them a flashlight to read a book or provide coloring books for them to decorate.

And when you catch a warmer day, bundle up and head outside, but until then try some of the above indoor activities.  You will find that they’re less temper tantrums and fights, and it will give you some “valuable” time to get a few things accomplished in the house also.

Attitude of Gratitude

We want to wish everyone a relaxing Thanksgiving. We are thankful for all of you and the support you have given us over the years.  We always strive to give you our best and be your health advocates.

Studies consistently confirm the many health benefits of gratitude. According to a 2000 study by Emmons and Crumpler, people who regularly express gratitude have better physical health, more optimism, enhanced well-being, and help others more. Adopting an attitude of gratitude:

  • Improves energy, resiliency and immunity
  • Increases happiness, reduces anxiety and depression
  • Minimizes toxic emotions
  • Strengthens relationships
  • Improves sleep

Eliminating stress is impossible. Stress is necessary and can be positive. It is the motivator to help us get things done. We just need to know tips to help reduce it. With the season of stress approaching, here are few quick ways to make your day brighter and help you take a moment to be grateful for all you have.

1) Put yourself in a Time-Out: Close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths focusing on the inhalation, exhalation and nothing else besides relaxing your body.

2) Stop checking your gadgets and enjoy dinner without your email, texts and phone interrupting your time with the people you love. Those individuals tied to their devices have been shown to have higher anxiety and depression than those who take conscious time to separate from the noise.

3) Avoid sugar and the mood swings that come with it.

4) Take an hour out of your month to set goals and decide what YOU want from life. Do not let others determine your path. The most successful people have both written and verbal goals.

5) Take time to enjoy some form of physical activity every day. Your body was made to move and activity has been shown repeatedly to reduce stress and improve one’s happiness. Activity can simply be walking your dog or participating in an exercise class.

Remember that your current crisis is not a lifestyle and will soon pass. It is important in times of high stress to remember and implement the tips above. Keep things simple this holiday season and focus on experiences. Do not forget to do things you enjoy and surround yourself with the people you love versus things.

Three Quick Techniques to Help You Meal Prep

Did you know that 20% of American meals are consumed in your car?¹  Americans consume 31% more packaged food than fresh food² and 1 in 4 individuals eat some for of fast food daily³. YIKES!!! We love statistics it is important to take a step back, look at our choices, and take action to make positive changes.

Commit to grocery shopping:

Many people start out trying to meal prep with food they have around the house.  Opening that can of Spaghetti o’s or cooking prepackaged meals are not much better than your trip to a restaurant. You may start your meal prepping journey by heading to the grocery store to pick up some fresh food more suitable to meet your goals. Limit processed and canned foods.  Shop the perimeter of the store to save money and reduce temptation of filling your cart with packaged, over-processed foods.  Create a list before you head to the store and stick to the list.  It is always tempting to fill the cart with unnecessary items when you do not have a plan.

Keep it simple:

With food prepping you are going to want to keep it simple with your food choices. Focus on three macro-nutrient groups: Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats.

See below for a few ideas for each food group!

Protein: Chicken breast,  beans, lentils, lean ground beef, pork, steak, tuna

Carbohydrates: Oats, quinoa, sweet potatoes, broccoli, wilted greens, brown rice, wild rice, whole-grain tortillas and wheat or whole grain bread.

Healthy fats: Avocados, Almonds, pecans, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, peanut butter, almond butter, olive oil and coconut oil

Pick a day:

Preparing your meal for the day every morning may set you up for failure and is time consuming. The best way to successfully prep is to pick a day of the week where you have time to spend planning and preparing for the week ahead. Our family usually picks Sunday because I have more time to devote towards cooking and prepping our week intake.  We are also able to do a pantry and fridge inventory to see what items we may need to fill the gaps during the week.  Remember you will want to prepare your protein, carb and fat choices in larger quantities and transfer them into smaller containers for the week ahead. An example of this could be roasting a whole chicken or throwing multiple chicken breasts into the Instapot with spices.  While the protein cooks you can prepare a variety of vegetables, such as mixed veggies in the skillet or baked sweet potatoes, and then divide all foods into appropriate portions in containers for your meals.  Another family favorite of ours are burrito bowls.  By prepping larger quantities of chicken, rice, beans, and peppers you can have a quick and delicious meals ready in minutes. A few minutes of chopping fresh vegetables for toppings can create a fresh, healthy, and nutritious meal to pair with your pre-made burrito bowl.

Hopefully you find these tips helpful and will start thinking ahead versus scrambling at the last minute to find options to feed your family!

What are the Benefits of Meal Prepping?

You have wrapped up another work day, are racing out the door to pick up your kids, get them to their activities in time, and also need to feed your family.  When we don’t have a plan we find ourselves in line at the drive through or cooking another frozen pizza.  Prepping food and standing over the stove is the last thing on your to-do list.  With some planning it is possible to save time, save money, and provide healthy meal options for your family all week long with little effort.

Save Time!

Fortunately, there is a solution that can help you save time and won’t leave you hungry.  Must-haves in our kitchen, in addition to the standard kitchen appliances are our Instapot and Air fryer.  Meal prepping is a great way to save you from spending hours every single day in the kitchen. There are a few different ways to meal prep. A simple way to start could be to pick a day, for our family it is Sunday, and pick a main entrée that you can include in every meal. For example, you may cook up chicken breasts and then over the course of a few days use them in different meals. This could include: chicken and rice, chicken and broccoli, chicken and a sweet potato, and chicken salad. Whatever the combination, it will save you time having everything planned out.  Our family loves to use Snapware glass storage containers.  We will weigh and portion out the food and freeze.  A rough rule of thumb for portions are 4-6 oz of protein, 1/2 cup rice or potato, and 1-2 cups of vegetables.  This makes for fast meals on the go to eat at work, as well.

Save Money!

Not having a plan or being prepared tends to lead to unhealthy food choices. Let’s face it at the end of the day you may be physically and mentally tired and then have to cook for your family. This may lead to you grabbing that frozen pizza, package of mac-n-cheese, or going out to eat! Eating out can be expensive when you do it frequently. With prepping ahead of time, this will help you stay on track budget-wise  and limit the fast food stops on the way home.

Be Healthy!

It is common knowledge that eating more healthy foods will help you feel better. Don’t believe me? Try eating clean for a week and then making a trip to McDonald’s.  You see, our bodies aren’t equipped to eat over-processed greasy foods on a regular basis. By incorporating healthier foods into your daily diet, your body can get the nutrients it needs to run efficiently! Also, when eating smaller portions more frequently throughout the day, your metabolism can increase, and you can burn more calories. I invite you to try meal prepping. Make this a family event.  Create simple tasks and instructions your children can follow.  You are creating life-long healthy eating habits for them.  After all, our health is most important for us to be the best we can be!

I highly recommend Dr. Melanie and Dr. Chris to help with you and your children's sore back or health needs. They do an amazing job of being thorough about what might be wrong, and they genuinely want to help you get better. You will not get the typical experience with a chiropractor who keeps you coming back indefinitely. They will work hard to make sure you get better or figure out what's wrong if the adjustments aren't getting you back to 100%. They also give back to the community with classes about health, wellness, and essential oils. Overall you couldn't pick a better chiropractic practice for yourself and your family. Venture Chiropractic is my preferred FM area chiropractors. Both Dr Chris and Dr Melanie really listen to the problem and treat the person, not just use a cookie cutter method for 'neck' pain. They both go out of their way to explain what the issue is, why it is occurring, and how to alleviate the pain through stretch and exercise. Their professionalism and bed side manner is top notch, something that is getting harder and harder to find. I had neck pain that just wouldn't go away. It was painful to turn my head; I couldn't even put my chin on my chest. Dr Chris did the Graston technique and immediately I felt relief and increased mobility. The following day I could put my chin on my chest and turn my head with NO pain! Something else I really like about Dr Chris and Dr Melanie is that they do extremity manipulation. I am always surprised at how 'off' my arms and legs are but after an adjustment I feel as good as new. My 4 year old has been going to Dr Melanie since he was a baby. She is great in getting kids adjusted whether they are cooperating or crawling around on the floor 'driving trucks'. As a bonus, not only am I able to get an adjustment but I can schedule a massage, all in one location. I recommend Venture Chiropractic. I was having some significant chronic lower back pain that was causing me to stop exercising and compete in events (something I love to do). I went to other chiropractors for months that used the "clicker" approach, which was largely ineffective for me. Dr. Chris had me fixed after only 4 sessions over the course of a month and a half. He also explained to me why I was having the issues (tight hip muscles, particularly on one side) and several stretching exercises to do daily. It's now been over a year since I've needed any help, and the stretching has worked perfectly. I've had no back pain or pinched nerve feelings since then. I highly recommend Dr. Chris to anyone, particularly to athletes or active people that have injuries or pain that is limiting your ability to remain active. --Mark R.

I came in as a skeptic of chiropractic care, but I was experiencing sudden excruciating pain and a friend recommended that I try Venture Chiropractic. I came in to see Dr. Travis as a nonbeliever of this style of healing, but I was transformed to becoming a huge proponent of what he does. He helps give you your life back, individualizing your care to meet your lifestyle. Dr. Travis took the time to become familiar with the physical demands of my job as a nurse to tailor my adjustments and strengthening sessions to meet those demands. He takes time to listen to what your symptoms are and he works with you to attain goals, including living a pain free life! They are honest enough to let you switch from one of their great team members to another if they think it will work  better for you.  Also, they have the greatest personal trainer and health coach there.  Dustin actually listens to your needs and tailors things to fit your lifestyle. Dr. Melanie has worked on my neck, back, and hips for years. With injuries and migraines I need the help. She has treated my son and daughter as well. I also had her treat me while I was pregnant. I truly would recommend this team of professional and caring people to anyone. There is none of that oh you have to come back just because, no it's well come back when or if you need to. I have had a Dr. that lectured me for an hour while I was in so much pain cause my hip was out. He barely did anything to my hip. Told me to come back the next day. I have never had anyone do that. He popped it right back in the next day. Then I found Venture Chiropractic after that. I was new to the area at the time. (10 years ago) Best thing I ever done was start at Venture. Everyone at Venture Chiropractic are the best and most professional people. Melanie takes care of me whenever my headaches start to flare up. I love that they are not a pushy business and let you decide what you need from them. --Carmen H.

I have been going to Venture Chiropractic for about a year and a half now and I LOVE it! Dr. Chris is an amazing chiropractor that thinks outside of the box to fix the root cause and not just address your symptoms. My husband also sees Dr. Chris and our 3.5 year old daughter sees Dr. Melanie. Dr. Melanie is amazing with her! In fact, whenever we are on our way to see them she chants in the car "we get to see Chris and Melanie!!" The whole way there. I recommend Venture to all of my friends and would recommend them for you! -Kathy J.
