How Can A Chiropractor Help During Pregnancy?
A women’s body undergoes many changes during her pregnancy. The following conditions are commonly treated by a chiropractor.
Back Pain
The protruding bump in front of you confirms the growth of your baby, but it can also lead to back pain. As your center for gravity changes it can lead to bad posture. Your head moves forward causing strain on your neck and upper back, your shoulders and chest are hunched forward making breathing and digestion difficult, and in later stages of pregnancy abdominal muscles spread and weaken making room for a growing baby. Abdominal muscles are less able to contract and keep your lower back in proper alignment. An additional factor is that increasing hormone levels can also cause joints and ligaments to loosen.
Pelvic Pain
The pelvis gives support to your midback and abdomen connecting the upper part of your body to your lower half. During pregnancy the pressure on your pelvis increases and can lead to symphysis pubis dysfunction. This condition occurs when hormones prepare your body for delivery. If muscles become overstretched during pregnancy, the pelvis can become misaligned. The joints can be adjusted to alleviate pressure on the joints and soft tissue strain can be addressed with muscle work and exercises.

Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is approximately the size of your thumb and it runs from the lower back through the back of the leg, and down to the toes. During pregnancy, long hours of sitting can compress nerves and you might experience pain and numbness.
What are the Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?
There are many women who seek chiropractic care while pregnant, or before becoming pregnant. There are many benefits of seeking chiropractic care while pregnant. A chiropractor can maintain posture and decrease the intensity of pain.
Restores Pelvic Balance
During pregnancy, pelvic misalignment can lead to less room for the baby to develop. When baby is not in the optimal head down position it can make mom more uncomfortable, as well. Chiropractors who are Webster certified can assist in reducing soft tissue tension and improve joint movement, especially found with the sacrum. The sacrum is the door to birth and it needs to be able to move to create more room for baby during pregnancy and labor. Optimal positioning of baby and pelvic balance may lead to a faster, easier labor and delivery. Many women have issues with their pelvic balance during pregnancy due to poor posture and repetitive positions that promote poor balance.
