Most people are aware of New Year’s resolutions, and are also aware of how often those resolutions fail. According to multiple sources (Forbes, Washington Post, etc.) on the internet, only 8 to 15% of resolutions are kept, and most resolutions are broken by February.

What are some things to help make sure that you achieve your resolutions/goals in 2018? First, remember that to get results and hit targets, we need to change habits. Expecting change in ourselves without changing our habits can assure that you will be in the same place you were the year before. Second, use the SMART goal system to help set goals that are more specific. SMART stands for:

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Realistic

T – Timely

An example would be as follows:

Bad Goal: I want to exercise more in 2018.

SMART Goal: I want to exercise 4 times a week at the gym for all 52 weeks in 2018, for 30 minutes each workout.

One thing I have done to help keep resolutions/goals, is obtain a book that I can break down my bigger goals, into smaller weekly goals that I can check off. This helps me be accountable. For you, it may be telling your goals to your spouse or friend, or putting your goals on your mirror where you get ready every morning. The last thing to remember is that without accountability, goals are much harder to achieve.

Go out there and change your life for the best!!
