Football is back!!! That means Friday night lights, cheering for you favorite school, and watching some good hits on the gridiron. But this is also the time to stress the importance of concussions. According to a study by the Journal of Athletic Training called Concussions among United States High School and Collegiate Athletes, Sports are the second most common cause of concussions behind car accidents, and football and soccer are the most common sports for athletes to sustain a concussion, affecting roughly 300,000 high school and collegiate athletes every year. According to the study, females were also most likely to sustain a concussion over males, the most common sport being soccer.
Knowing these things is important to keep in mind and listed below are a few of side effects of a concussion:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Memory problems
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Balance problems
- Slow reactions to stimuli
- Sensitivity to light or noise
These symptoms after athletic events are very important, and can help young athletes from having permanent problems and damage. If caught early, proper care can be taken to help the athlete heal. If young athletes you know experience symptoms such as these, we can help assess and treat symptoms of concussions here at Venture Chiropractic, and help get these athletes back on the field.
