There are so many topical pain relievers on the market nowadays. We often get asked which one’s we recommend or use in the office, and what do they do exactly? Our most common topical pain relievers that are used in office are Biofreeze and China Gel.
Biofreeze:
Biofreeze is the #1 clinically recommended topical pain reliever by pharmacists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists. These products are considered “cold therapy”. Whether it’s the gel, spray, or roll-on gel that’s applied to the skin, it provides a temporary cooling relief for muscle and joint pains. Like other topical pain relievers, its purpose is based on the “Pain Gate Theory”. The main active ingredient Menthol, helps block the nerves that signal pain and provides a sense of relief with the cooling sensation.
Biofreeze is available for purchase at places like CVS or Walmart but there is a difference between what we sell and other places. We are able to sell “Professional Level” Biofreeze with a higher percentage of Menthol, which provides stronger relief. These products are relatively similar prices, making this a better deal for people who purchase the product from our office.
Areas that Biofreeze temporarily can help is back & neck pain, arthritis, extremity injuries, aching muscles or joints, or sprains / strains.
China-Gel:
China-Gel is an herbal topical pain reliever that incorporates modern technology with ancient pain-relieving concepts of Chinese medicine helping to relieve muscle and joint pain and enhance healing. It contains 7 herbal ingredients (menthol, camphor, lavender, angelica, ginseng, aloe vera and witch hazel). Due to the herbal ingredients in this product, this helps stimulate the body’s natural function to reduce pain & inflammation. Unlike most of the other topical pain relievers, China-Gel has more of a pleasant smell of menthol/lavender.
China-Gel is commonly used on joint pain, muscle strain, arthritis, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, and other musculoskeletal pain disorders.
